Republicans Suck, Right? But What About When 75 Democrats Vote For Their Ugly Anti-Immigrant Bill?

We Name The Names

On Monday, all the Republicans voted to back Trump’s deportation agenda (except Marjorie Traitor Greene, who, caught up in some crackpot QAnon conspiracy theory, voted “present”)— every single one of the rest of them including the Republicans who go back to their districts and pretend to be vaguely “mainstream,” including, for example, Mike Lawler (NY), Nick LaLota (NY), Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA), Zach Nunn (IA), Tom Kean (NJ), Young Kim (CA), David Valadao (CA), Ryan Mackenzie (PA), Rob Bresnahan (PA), Juan Ciscomani (AZ), Derrick Van Orden (WI), Bryan Steil (WI), Don Bacon (NE), Maria Salazar (FL), Jen Kiggans (VA)… But people are used to the knee jerk reaction from Republicans on everything by now.
Lehigh County controller— and probably congressional candidate— Mark Pinsley noted that “Ryan Mackenzie's vote for Roll Call 158 was not about fighting antisemitism. It was about making militarized immigration enforcement look virtuous. The resolution thanked ICE, attacked sanctuary laws, and used Jewish pain to push an anti-immigrant agenda. As a Jew, I know our history. Our trauma has been used before to justify power. That is happening again. Just like Putin claims to fight Nazis in Ukraine while bombing Jewish neighborhoods, Republicans now claim to fight antisemitism while turning ICE against our people and sending troops into California to intimidate American citizens. They are using immigration as an excuse to build an authoritarian model of government. This is not about border security or protecting Jews. It is about absolute power. If a shot is heard round the world again, it will not come from those seeking justice. It will come from a government that turned its force against its people. And history will remember who gave the orders, who voted for them, and who stayed silent.”
What was really revolting on Monday was how the Democrats split. Most (113) voted against it. But 75 Democrats voted for Trump’s mass deportation agenda! (There were 33 Members who weren’t back in town yet, so the “aye” contingent was missing GOP-friendly Dems like Josh Gottheimer (NJ), Mikie Sherrill (NJ), Hillary Scholten (MI) and Jim Costa (CA).) Crypto-Congressman Shomari Figures (AL) joined Marjorie Traitor Greene in voting “present.”)

The House had just voted 400-0 for a resolution condemning the anti-Semitic terrorist attack in Boulder. But the Republicans were trying to pass this second resolution off as also a condemnation of anti-Semitism, J Street, which had whipped voted on the earlier resolution said this one was “exactly the kind of resolution you’d expect when MAGA hardliners hijack concerns about antisemitism to push their longstanding anti-immigrant, anti-democracy agenda. While there are parts of this second resolution we could support, the text overwhelmingly focuses not on antisemitism but on opposition to immigration. Over the past few days, many of the most toxic parts of the resolution have been stripped out, but the final text being voted on today still expresses gratitude to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and frames the entire problem of antisemitism as an immigration challenge. This is a transparent, well-worn DC play. Put Democrats in a political box by forcing them to choose between voting against an antisemitism resolution so Republicans can slam them as being antisemitic and anti-Israel— or voting for the resolution, so they can hit the Party for being divided and chaotic. It’s political theater, designed for bad-faith attack ads and Fox News clips.”
Travis Terrell is confronting the issue in his campaign and is telling Iowans that “Condemning antisemitism didn’t require a racist resolution. It already happened. The House passed that resolution 400 to 0 after the Boulder attack. Every single member agreed. That’s what common sense and justice looks like and is where it should've ended, had that been the intention. What came next was just an easy to spot trap designed to smear immigrants, celebrate ICE, and hand Republicans like Mariannette Miller-Meeks another dishonest talking point for their campaign ads. 75 Democrats voted to support the resolution, hand Republicans ammo for their next set of attack ads. Thanking ICE as agents are in LA fueling chaos, and attacking reporters. Iowa deserves a representative who will stand on policy and progress instead of rolling out trojan horse tricks to score manufactured momentum. Seeing Miller-Meeks vote for a resolution that gives her yet another thing to pretend to stand on instead of actually working for Iowans is no surprise but we need to demand better from Democrats.”

Among other things, it thanks ICE for for its great work— right at a time when they’re rampaging through Los Angeles attacking people. And yet… cowardly California Democrats Adam Gray, Dave Min, George Whitesides, Josh Harder, Eric Swalwell, Norma Torres, Raul Ruiz and Raul Ruiz fell right into the Republican trap and voted for it. Next year, voters should remember who stood up for California and who didn’t.
Axios’ headline writer, of course, got the whole narrative wrong— straight out of the GOP (or New Dem) playbook: 113 House Democrats vote against GOP resolution condemning Boulder attack.
