They've been making slow but steady gains for decades and now the rate has increased thanks to Herr Trump and all of his 70 million accomplices, fans, and other supporters who have been emboldened and encouraged by his words and actions, not to mention an all but non-existent resistance and an opposition party that is complacent on its "best" days and go along to get along or totally agreeable all other times.
