In January 2025, after the Democrats have taken back the House, Jim McGovern (D-MA) will become chair of the Rules Committee. Right now he is the Ranking Member. As part of teh suicidal deal McCarthy made with the “Freedom” Caucus to get himself elected speaker for a few months, there are 9 Republicans on the committee, instead of 6. And there are 4 Democrats. I hope the Democrats in the 119th Congress remember how and why this ugly partisan imbalance was created. As it stands now, the Democrats have no role on the committee other than to complain. And on Tuesday, McGovern showed how effect that can be. You might want to watch the video of him laying out the Democratic position on the GOP’s fraudulent impeachment process. He didn’t miss a beat:
“Donald Trump says jump, the MAGA extremists say how high. Donald Trump asked them to impeach Joe Biden and here we are. They broke the law trying to stop Joe Biden from becoming president. They broke the law trying to violently overturn the election to prevent Joe Biden from taking office and now they are waging this extreme political stunt by abusing and weaponizing the impeachment process. They tried to overturn the election on January 6th and now they want to finish the job. And today Democrats on the Rules Committee will make a simple case to the American people first that Joe Biden is a man of decency and integrity who respects the law and this impeachment charade is an extreme political stunt designed to help Donald Trump win. Second- that every absurd Republican allegation against Joe Biden has been debunked. Third that despite this fraudulent process, Republicans have received extraordinary cooperation from the White House. And fourth that Republicans are doing this because they are focused on the wrong priorities and want to distract from their total failure to get anything done and when this is all over I am confident that the American people will overwhelmingly agree that this whole impeachment stunt is a national disgrace designed to distract from their own incompetence and to help Donald Trump, a twice impeached ex-president who's been indicted more times than he's been elected. I'm confident that they will see that this is about vengeance retaliation and distraction.”
McGovern, continued, especially addressing MAGA committee members Ralph Norman (R-SC), Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Chip Roy (R-TX), “Those on the far right of the Republican Party have nothing to show for their time and power. They have never accepted that Joe Biden won. Obviously they have contempt for the American people and they are once again trying to overturn the election. They are willing to do anything and everything to get their way, our democracy be damned.”
Then, referencing conservatives in swing districting pretending to be mainstream— like Don Bacon (R-NE), Mike Lawler (R-NY), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Nick LaLota (R-NY), Michelle Steel (R-CA), Tom Kean (R-NJ), Juan Ciscomani (R-AZ), Maria Salazar (R-FL), John James (R-MI), Young Kim (R-CA), Marc Molinaro (R-NY), Mike Garcia (R-CA), Bill Huizenga (R-MI), Brandon Williams (R-NY), Ken Calvert (R-CA), etc— “And my so-called moderate colleagues on the other side of the aisle are unwilling or unable to say enough is enough to those who are dead set on pursuing this extreme nonsense…”
Many of these fake moderates won’t be coming back for the 119th Congress, in part because MAGA Mike and the-extremists-in-charge are forcing them to vote on crackpot, performative resolutions like this impeachment nonsense Trump is demanding of them. This kind of crap is certainly what super-partisan, largely hopeless MAGAts in backward, rural counties across the South get off on but swing voters in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Orange County, California, Maricopa County, Arizona, Douglas County, Nebraska, Onondaga County, New York, Westchester County, New York, Suffolk County, New York, Pima County, Arizona, Gallatin County, Montana, Dade County, Florida, Montgomery County, Ohio, Pinellas County, Florida…
This morning, Luke Broadwater reported that “The Republican-led House is on track to approve a formal impeachment inquiry into President Biden on Wednesday, pushing forward with a yearlong GOP investigation that has failed to produce evidence of anything approaching high crimes or misdemeanors… GOP leaders refrained for months from calling a vote to open an impeachment inquiry, given the reservations of mainstream Republicans, many of them from politically competitive districts, about moving forward without proof that Biden did anything wrong. But the political ground has shifted considerably, and most of them are now willing to do so, emphasizing that they are not yet ready to charge the president.
Republicans have labored, so far without success, to prove that President Biden was enriched by his son’s business dealings. Many of the documents they have produced thus far have, in fact, demonstrated the opposite: that Biden lent money to his son and brother when they were in need, and they later paid him back.
The House Oversight Committee released documents that showed that one of Hunter Biden’s businesses, Owasco PC, made three payments of $1,380 to Joseph Biden Jr. in 2018 when he was not in office. Republicans said the payments were evidence of corruption. Other documents indicate the money was to pay back his father for helping to cover the cost of a Ford truck.
The Lincoln Project has been busy. I wonder who watches their stuff. Swing voters? I sure hope so. This is supposed to be scary. I think it works ir presenting Trump's flaws from a Republican point of view.
