Maryland Neo-Fascist Dan Cox Is Running For A Swing Congressional Seat In An Open District

Maryland had a pretty severe redistricting in 2020— courtesy of a state judge who objected to the Democratic legislature’s attempted gerrymander— and David Trone’s district, MD-06, went from a totally safe D+16 to an R+1 swing district. State legislator Neil Parrott ran twice, losing with 39% of the vote in 2020 but with 45.2% under the new boundaries last year— 140,295 (54.8%) to 115,771 (45.2%). In the MAGA counties in the western part of the district— Garrett, Allegany and Washington, he racked up big wins, respectively 75%, 65% and 59%. Those counties, by the way, have been trying to secede from Maryland and join the great state of West Virginia.

While Parrott was running for that congressional seat, far right extremist and psychopath, Dan Cox, was running for governor. He lost in a massive landslide— 1,293,944 (64.7%) to 644,000 (32.2%), but he did win Garrett, Allegany and Washington counties, 74%, 65% and 59% respectively. And, like Parrott, he lost the more populous counties in the eastern part of the district, Frederick and Montgomery. Cox also lost CD-06 to Democrat Wes Moore in the gubernatorial race.

While dredge all this up again? Cox filed to run yesterday in the 6th district for what is now an open seat. Trone is running for the Senate nomination. This is important for a few reasons, not the least of which is that Trone, a self-funder, spent $2,545,000 of his own money in 2020 (to Parrott’s told expenditure of $261,259) and $9,949,194 of his own cash in 2022 (to Parrott’s $1,166,800). Not having the power of incumbency and not having an unlimited bank account, makes the race look very tempting.

Aside from the 14 Democrats who have either declared or are toying with declaring, there are already 5 Republicans in the race— including Parrott— and 3 other talking about jumping in. Cox, a deranged MAGAt, will probably get Trump’s endorsement. He was a state legislator who ran for Congress before (2016)— and being thrashed by Jamie Raskin in the district next door, 220,657 (60.7%) to 124,651 (34.3%).

When Cox won the gubernatorial nomination, outgoing Gov. Larry Hogan, a mainstream Republican, called him a QAnon whack job. Later he said Cox is “not mentally stable. He wanted to hang my friend, Mike Pence, and took three busloads of people to the Capitol.” Cox rn his losing gubernatorial campaign by insisting Moore, a businessman, is a communist.
