Trumpism Is What Happens When You Break Every Commandment

For a movement that wraps itself in the Bible and calls itself “pro-God,” MAGA sure has a funny way of honoring basic Judeo-Christian values. Did you hear Trump talking about his love for God when he announced he had just bombed Iran on Saturday? The Ten Commandments— long held up as a moral foundation for believers— are ignored by Trump and his followers. They’re also obliterated, desecrated, inverted…This isn’t a movement that fails to live up to its values; it’s one without the self-awareness to even understand that it’s defiling them… all the while demanding obedience in the name of God and country. Have you noticed that they want the Ten Commandments in schools— but they can’t follow a single one?

As part of a morning ritual, I meditate on the 10 commandments everyday. This is a little off the beaten path, even for me, but here’s a contemporary read of each commandment, and how the MAGA movement breaks it— sometimes gleefully, always shamelessly.

1. You shall have no other gods before Me

MAGA has turned Trump into a golden idol, worshipped not for his wisdom or decency but for his cruelty and entitlement. He’s not a leader— they see him as a savior. The rallies, the chants, the blind loyalty— it’s not politics anymore. It’s a cult. And it breaks the first rule of faith.

2. You shall not make for yourself a carved image

The red hat is the carved image of our time. Add the Trump bobbleheads, the T-shirts with his face fused onto Rambo’s body, the “God, Guns, and Trump” flags fluttering outside mobile homes, the Trump family cryptocurrency— and you get the picture. A Trump-themed Bible? He’s already violated every page. It isn’t reverence; you know it’s merchandise.

3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain

Trumpists love to invoke God… at rallies, online in courtrooms even on their weapons. But invoking religion while pushing hatred, war, cruelty toward migrants and policies that abandon the poor? That’s the very definition of taking the Lord’s name in vain. These aren’t Christians. They’re con artists in pews.

4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy

The MAGA base doesn’t rest. It fumes. Trump’s movement runs on rage— 24/7 grievance TV, conspiracy rabbit holes, and social media tantrums. There’s no room for reflection or rest when your politics is a never-ending tantrum about losing “your” country.

5. Honor your father and your mother

They dishonor every generation— denying climate change that threatens our kids, cutting education for future generations, banning books that tell the truth about our history, working to defund Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, food stamps, CFPB and Meals on Wheels and mocking the wisdom of elders who know fascism when they see it.

6. You shall not murder

Their policies kill. Whether it’s forcing women to give birth against their will, cheering on mass shooters with “thoughts and prayers,” or glorifying police brutality and border violence MAGA doesn’t protect life. In fact, it fetishizes dominance and death.

7. You shall not commit adultery

Trump is a serial adulterer who paid hush money to a porn star, and the base loved him more for it. But more importantly, MAGA has committed a political adultery— cheating on democracy with strongmen, liars, and billionaire overlords. They don't want representatives. They actually want rulers to tell them what to do.

8. You shall not steal

This is a movement built on theft— f wages, of voting rights, of public land, of healthcare, of tax money handed to the wealthy. And yes— of classified documents from the White House to be stored in a Mar-a-Lago bathroom.

9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor

Lying is the MAGA lingua franca. Lies about the election. Lies about immigrants. Lies about vaccines, drag queens, and school librarians. The movement thrives on misinformation because the truth— about its failures, its corruption, its cowardice— is too dangerous to acknowledge.

10. You shall not covet

MAGA is fueled by coveting: resentment that someone else got ahead, that immigrants might make a life, that Black voters have power, that women have choices, that LGBTQ+ people have visibility. This isn’t about pride or liberty. It’s about jealousy weaponized into hate.

Trumpism isn’t an expression of moral values— it’s a demolition of them. And the Republican Party, as currently constituted, has become a vehicle for this theocratic nihilism, this poisoned fusion of religious hypocrisy and authoritarian politics.

So the next time a Bible-thumping Republican talks about posting the Ten Commandments in classrooms or courthouses, ask them if they’ve actually read them. Because if they had, they might see a mirror— not a monument.
